The York County Planning Commission
was originally created in 1959 by the Board of County Commissioners through
provisions in the County Code. The County Commissioners recognized the
need for planning for the future growth of York County. At a minimum the
Planning Commission is authorized to prepare a comprehensive plan for the
development of York County.
With the consent of the County
Commissioners, the Planning Commission administers Federal programs such as the
Community Development Block Grant Program and the Metropolitan Transportation
Planning Program. They also administer State programs such as the
Weatherization Program. Technical assistance is provided to municipalities
requesting planning services such as development of Comprehensive Plans, Zoning
Ordinances and Subdivision\Land Development Ordinances. In Accordance with
the PA Municipalities Planning Code, the Planning Commission reviews and makes
recommendations to municipalities on proposed plans, ordinances and ordinance
amendments as well as all subdivision and land development plans.
The Commission consists of nine
members appointed by the County Commissioners. Seven of the members
represent specific geographic regions of the County and two are at-large
members. Each member serves a four year term.

In
order to conduct the work of the Planning Commission the staff of 36 full-time
and 2 part-time employees is organized into five planning divisions, support
staff and administration.
